Remember the Stranger-An Invincible Warrior
Captain Edwards "hove to" the flying wing and made a perfect slow speed soft landing. He "hove to" by putting his right rudder hard over and giving slight power to his left wing #2 and #4 engines resulting in a controlled, slow, gradual spin-like a falling maple seed as described in my last post.
When "hove to" in a sailboat your smallest headsail is to windward and your rudder tiller to leeward. Your sailboat will slowly drift backwards, gently keep trying to come up into the wind, and stay at the proper angle to meet the head seas. This tactic has allowed sailors to survive the fiercest gales.
Whether "hove to" on the sea or "hove to" in the air you are in perfect balance with the destructive elements of nature-Ying-Yang-and you understand the spiritual nature of a thing.
The greatest warrior who ever lived-Miyamoto Musashi-knew his greatest weapon to keep himself from harm was his spirituality. All true seaman and all true aviators understand this. In the words of Miyamoto Musashi: "If you train well, you will be able to strike...with the power of your spirit. When you have reached this height, does this not mean you are invincible!"
Captain Edwards was an invincible warrior who deserves the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor.
